Schutzhund is a German word meaning "protection dog"
Schutzhund today is a sport and a way to measure the dog's working ability for breed worthiness keeping to the true spirit of what the working dog was bred for.
There are 3 phase in Schutzhund
a) Tracking
b) Obedience
c) Protection
A passing score in all 3 phases must be achieved before you can hold a Schutzhund title - there a 3 levels of Schutzhund titles, SCH1, SCH2, and SCH3 each getting progressively more difficult to master as you go up a level. Though before you can attempt to achieve a SCH1 you must pass the Begleithund (BH) trial- translated to "companion dog" . For all things a Schutzhund dog should be a safe dog and a valuable member of the family
